AI Overviews and AI Mode: How Google Search Is Changing in 2026

If you've Googled anything in 2026, you already know — the search results page looks nothing like it did two years ago. AI Overviews now dominate the top of nearly every informational query, and AI Mode has rolled out globally as Google's default conversational search experience. The traditional ten blue links? They're being pushed below the fold — or disappearing entirely.

    What are AI Overviews?

AI Overviews launched in the US in mid-2024, rolled out internationally through 2025 and are now a fixture on the vast majority of Google search results worldwide. When someone searches a question — 'how do I reduce bounce rate on my website' or 'best CRM for a small construction firm' — Google's AI reads dozens of pages, synthesises the information and presents a paragraph-length answer directly in the search results.

The key detail: users get their answer without clicking through to your website. Google still links to the sources it drew from, but click-through rates on those links are significantly lower than traditional organic results. Data from major search analytics platforms now shows a 35–50% drop in clicks for queries where an AI Overview appears — up from 25–40% a year ago as users have grown accustomed to consuming answers directly in Google.

    AI Mode: now the default

AI Mode — Google's conversational search experience that merged Search with Gemini — is no longer a test feature. It's now the default search interface for millions of users. Instead of typing keywords and browsing results, users ask questions, get detailed answers and ask follow-ups without ever leaving Google.

For businesses, this means your website needs to be the source Google's AI trusts and cites. Simply ranking on page one is no longer enough — you need to be the authority that AI draws from when constructing its answers.

What this means for businesses in 2026

The shift has accelerated faster than most predicted. Informational pages — how-to guides, FAQs, glossaries — have been hit hardest, with some businesses reporting 50–70% traffic declines on these page types. Commercial and transactional pages are now feeling the impact too, as AI Overviews expand into product comparisons, pricing queries and 'best of' searches.

Businesses that relied on blog traffic to fill their pipeline have had to fundamentally rethink their content strategy. A 2,000-word article answering a common question no longer generates the steady organic visits it once did. Google extracts the answer and displays it before anyone reaches your site.

How to adapt your SEO strategy

The businesses winning in this new landscape are doing a few things differently:

    • Structuring content for extraction — Google's AI pulls from pages with clear headings, concise answers and well-organised data. If your content is structured with proper H2s, bullet points and direct answers to specific questions, you're more likely to be the source cited in an AI Overview.
    • Targeting queries AI can't fully answer — Complex, opinion-based, experience-driven or hyper-local queries still drive clicks. 'Best CRM software' gets an AI Overview. 'Should I build a custom CRM for my recruitment agency in Leeds' doesn't — yet.
    • Building topical authority — Google's AI favours sources that demonstrate deep expertise on a subject. A single blog post won't cut it. A cluster of interconnected pages covering every angle of a topic signals authority that the AI recognises and cites.
    • Investing in branded search — When people search for your company by name, AI Overviews don't interfere. Building brand awareness through other channels (social, PR, partnerships) protects a portion of your traffic from AI disruption.
    • Optimising for citation, not just ranking — In 2026, being cited as a source in an AI Overview can drive more qualified traffic than a traditional position-one ranking. Structure your content to be citable — clear data points, original research and definitive answers.

Schema markup matters more than ever

Structured data has always been important for SEO, but with AI Overviews it's become critical. FAQ schema, How-To schema, product schema and organisation schema all help Google's AI understand what your content covers and how to cite it. Pages with comprehensive schema markup are significantly more likely to appear as sources in AI Overviews.

We've seen clients increase their AI Overview citation rate by 3x after implementing detailed schema across their service and knowledge pages. It's one of the highest-ROI technical SEO tasks you can do right now.

    The zero-click reality in 2026

Here's the uncomfortable truth: zero-click searches — where users get their answer without visiting any website — now account for over 65% of all Google searches, up from around 60% in 2025. AI Overviews and AI Mode are accelerating that trend at pace. Fighting against it is pointless. Adapting to it is essential.

That doesn't mean SEO is dead. It means SEO has evolved into something fundamentally different. The goal isn't just to rank — it's to be the source Google trusts enough to cite. And the businesses that have adapted their content strategy are the ones maintaining visibility while competitors watch their traffic decline.

    What we're doing for clients

We're restructuring client websites around this reality. That means rewriting key pages for AI extractability, implementing comprehensive schema markup, building deep topical clusters that establish authority, and shifting measurement from pure traffic volume to citation frequency, lead quality and conversion rates. The rules have changed — and the agencies that pretend otherwise are doing their clients a disservice.
